Timely detection of fire limits damage and can save lives. A good fire alarm system can often prevent or limit the devastating consequences of a fire. In the private sector, smoke, heat and carbon monoxide detectors save hundreds of lives every year. From 1 July 2022, every residential home must also be equipped with smoke alarm(s) for this reason.
In the business sector and certainly in public buildings, stricter requirements apply. These are described in NEN2535, in the 2012 Building Decree and the Decree on Building Works for the Living Environment (Environment Act 2024).
A structure must have facilities for the timely detection of fire so that occupants can escape in time. A fire alarm and evacuation alarm system are compulsory for a number of user functions.
