During the dark months, the number of residential burglaries rises sharply in smaller municipalities. The AD concludes this from police data. In some municipalities, burglaries are even three times more frequent in winter than in summer.
Normally, from November to February, the number of burglaries increases by about 50 per cent everywhere, as burglars can take advantage of the darkness. But in big cities, that increase is only about 35 per cent, while in small municipalities the rise can be as high as 70 per cent. This is especially true in the province of Utrecht, where nearly 35,000 burglaries occur in winter, but the biggest increase is in Goeree-Overflakkee, where burglaries occur four times more often during winter than in summer. In Bergen, in the province of Noord-Holland, and in Staphorst, burglaries are three times more frequent during winter than during the rest of the year.
Mobile gangs
Sybren van der Velden, national police residential burglary project leader, tells the AD that burglaries are increasingly committed by mobile gangs. These are better monitored in cities than in the countryside. The peak in burglaries occurs in December. Especially during the festive season, it is especially frequent. The police advise to always call 112 immediately in suspicious situations, as 80 per cent of burglars are caught thanks to tips from witnesses.
