For some years now, there has been a decline in the number of residential burglaries or attempted residential burglaries. Yet recent research, the results of which were written in a trend report, a number of things stand out.
- Most burglaries are in terraced houses
- In second place are detached houses
- Corner houses are the least burgled from 2013
- Number of burglaries in senior housing has increased since 2013.
The number of home robberies also seems to be falling. Although 2017 showed a slight increase again.
The top 20 items looted in a residential burglary hardly differ over the years. We do see that the share of cash declined in 2017. However, cash is often not recorded as such because it is not detectable. Ring, watch, bracelet and necklace increase relatively slightly. Photo camera, television, jewellery, computer, peripherals decrease slightly. The category other gradually increases over the years. This means that the loot is becoming more diverse.

It is known from the scientific literature that a high probability of being caught contributes significantly to preventing and curbing delinquent behaviour. Can also be read in the report residential burglaries from the Police Academy from 2012.
A alarm system or camera system is a very good preventive tool. Both increase the chance of being caught by early detection; as early as the exterior shield of the house. Also, burglars prefer not to come into view. This too increases the chance of being caught.
Do not underestimate the consequences of a burglary. It has a big impact. First, there are major emotional consequences. With emotions of anger, fear and disbelief. In addition, victims report having sleep problems in the period shortly after the burglary. In the long term, victims remain more suspicious and alert than before the burglary.
