From 1 July 2022, every floor of a residential building must be equipped with a smoke detector. This is due to new requirements for fire and escape safety in buildings. The smoke detectors must bear the European quality mark EN 14604.

This obligation already existed for new construction, so now all existing homes must also be equipped with smoke detectors. Every year, people die in house fires. When you sleep, you don't smell anything and your hearing works. Smoke detectors save lives! Insurers will also be alert to this after 1 July; if the requirement of a smoke detector on every floor is ignored, a payout after a fire may become difficult. You may be blamed for negligence which

the insurer does not have to pay anything.

The fire brigade issues the following opinion on the placement of the smoke detectors:

  • Install at least one smoke detector in the hallway and on the landing
  • Place smoke detectors on exterior escape routes
  • Place smoke detectors in the room where your washing machine and dryer are located
  • Place smoke detectors against the ceiling

It makes no sense to put a smoke detector in your kitchen (gas cooker), garage, above the heating or near ventilation openings.

Carbon monoxide detector

To make your home even safer, we recommend installing carbon monoxide detectors in addition to smoke detectors. Carbon monoxide is an odourless gas and therefore very dangerous. Place the carbon monoxide detector in case near your boiler and/or geyser.

Alarm system

If you already have an alarm system, you can extend it with smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. The detectors are then linked to the alarm system. In case of an emergency, the alarm system then also reports to mobile or control room in case of fire.
